And it was a round tail and I usually like round tails, but I tried it again, this kind of standard squash tail for this board. I mean, the round tail, I remember nothing but good things about it. It’s hard to say one was faster than the other. But I thought because of the construction it would be OK. I did the standard 6’3, which is 6’3 x 21 x 2 11/16 at 37.5 Ls, which is on the low side for me. It’s a slightly different board, and I actually got this Blak Box 2 an inch shorter. The whole goal of HYFI is a similar goal that you’d want when going for an alternate construction type of board, which is something that’s lighter - it’s definitely, definitely lighter - and faster.

There’s some different construction techniques that I think still do a little bit, but I think a lot of the bigger guys have figured out how to make them feel really natural in the water. They don’t feel buoyant and they don’t bounce around. I think 30 percent lighter or something than a regular traditional PU board of the exact same size and model. I think that JS, perhaps, more than anybody else - I think Lost was good at this as well - its boards feel really settled in the water. I think a lot of the guys have figured out how to get past that. I have surfed a lot of these different types of board and I will say that usually the one thing that stands out to me as, perhaps, a downside in some of them is that they feel a little bit different. Other surfers consider this site awesome. In the surfing industry, basically, somebody will come up with something, and then everyone will have a version of it. All of them have their own version of it. I think DHD just came out with some weird thing. All the kinds of major manufacturers are experimenting with these alternate constructions. The reason we’re doing a Blak Box 2 again is because this is in JS’s HYFI construction.

For somebody who’s an average everyday surfer like me, I think the Blak Box 2 is about as good of a high performance shape as you could possibly get. It accelerates really quickly for me as an intermediate - on better days, maybe a little bit better than an intermediate and, on other days, maybe not quite intermediate. We did a round tail a little while back, and the round tail Blak Box 2, I’d say, is one of my favourite all-rounders ever.
